This fan theory database is designed for Lion King fans and assumes that readers have a working knowledge of the original movie, as well as Simba's Pride and The Lion Guard. Some posts will also reference characters from the Six New Adventures books.

If you're not very familiar with any of these, I would suggest brushing up before reading any of the posts on this website.

Why Kion Isn’t In Simba’s Pride

Kion is Kiara’s younger brother and the main character of Disney Junior’s new TV spin-off series The Lion Guard (TLG). He’s not in the second Lion King movie, Simba’s Pride (SP), and I’m going to be looking at some fan theories about why. While most people agree that Kion wouldn’t be in the beginning of the movie because he is younger than Kiara and likely hadn’t been born yet, there are many different possible explanations for why he isn’t in the end of the movie.

Kion Was Kicked Out of the Pridelands

One fan theory that surfaced after “Never Judge A Hyena By Its Spots,” an episode of TLG in which Kion meets a good hyena named Jasiri, is that Kion and Jasiri fell in love and Simba banished him from the Pridelands. While there is no canon evidence of any cross-species romantic relationships within the Lion King (TLK) universe (unless you count Timon’s marriage proposal to Shenzi in Lion King 1 1/2) nothing explicitly prohibits them either. There is also an undeniable chemistry between Kion and Jasiri. Like Kion, Jasiri is concerned with maintaining the circle of life and she thinks about the effects that her actions have on all of the other animals in the area. They even sing a song about how they’re the same. Jasiri and Kion both put themselves in danger coming to each other’s rescue and they have a clear bond by the end of the episode.

At their current ages they would likely remain friends but if their feelings became more romantic during their adolescence it is entirely possible that they could have a romantic relationship. Given the canon evidence (both in TLK and TLG) of Simba’s negative views of hyenas and his general prejudice against Outlanders in SP, he wouldn’t be likely to accept his son being romantically involved with a hyena who lives in the Outlands. He would probably be about as trusting with Jasiri as he is with Kovu in SP. Being with Jasiri, in and of itself, most likely wouldn’t be enough for Kion to be banished but if, for instance, he defied Simba’s orders to stay away from Jasiri or even ran away with her then Simba might see that as a betrayal and kick Kion out in a fit of rage.

The Lion Guard Was On A Diplomatic Journey

Given that Kion and his friends would adolescents/young adults during the later parts of SP, it is plausible that they would be allowed to journey outside the Pridelands. It is canon that the hyenas have left the Outlands before Kiara’s first hunt. What if the Lion Guard finally chased off all of the bad hyenas and brought balance to the Pridelands? There would be a lot less for them to do there, especially considering the fact that they would have been helping the Pridelanders out long enough at that point for most of the animals to learn what not to do.

Peace in the Pridelands might encourage Kion to lead the Guard to other parts of the savanna to help maintain the circle of life there. They probably wouldn’t leave forever but if they went on missions or diplomatic excursions outside the Pridelands then they would be gone for several weeks at a time (especially if they were going to see other lion prides, because prides tend to keep lots of distance between them). The time between Kiara’s first hunt and the end of the movie is a matter of days, a few weeks at most. In this case, it would be not only possible but plausible for Kion and his friends to be gone that whole time on a mission.

TLG Takes Place In An Alternate Universe

Another possible explanation that some TLK fans have proposed is that TLG is an AU spin-off, meaning that it isn’t bound by the rules of the existing canon. This would negate both of the arguments I presented earlier because SP is part of the canon and an AU can be anything, even if it contradicts the canon. While this theory has some merit, especially given the introduction of new elements like the Roar of the Elders to the Lion King universe, it seems that the creators of TLG tried awfully hard to fit it into the existing canon. Both the fact that Scar’s story is intertwined with that of the Guard and the fact that Kiara is still a character suggest to me that they are going to try to integrate it into what already exists in the Lion King universe. That said, I would caution my readers not to dismiss TLG as an AU (at least not yet).

  1. Only other theory I thought of is that Kion is killed (possibly by the hyenas? Or the Outlander lions) off-screen during SP, which is why Simba is fiercely protective of Kiara, since he can't lose his other cub, too. It would also make sense since obviously we don't see Kion in SP, but since Kiara is born first the focus is on her. Just a thought.

  2. I gotta say, this is said to take place AFTER Kiara meets Kovu, so I guess I agree with the mission one.

  3. I tend to think either he took off for some reason of his own or was killed. Could lend to Simba's crazy overprotective attitude.

  4. Kion is a Lion and there only one Male lion per pack so he had to leave to make his own pack and took some Lioness with him

  5. It's true that is how it would go in the real world but in the Lion King universe it seems to be different, For example, Scar is still allowed in the Pridelands.

    1. scar might be too weak or lazy to go out and fend for himself or make his own pack. as lionesses are primary hunters, and how scar looks physically not strong, he might have stayed for convenience.

    2. Scar would stay because he is Mufasa's brother and brother make coalitions and stay. But, I doubt Kion would go; seeing he is Kiara, the future queen's sister, he would remain and lead the Lion Guard. Also, seeing the Kovu got to stay as future king, it makes no sense that Kion, the prince, should be sent of.

  6. I just watched an episode the other day that pitted Kion against the Outland pride. His roar in the end is what placed them at the termite mounds. I think that the mission one makes a bit of sense.

  7. The mission one doesn't make sense, as if that were the case he would of returned when crisis struck and at the very least he would of been mentioned.
At the beginning of the film Simba seems very different with Kiara, more relaxed, fun and willing to teach his young cub how to hunt by pouncing on zazu, where as when Kiara is older Simba is so over protective over his daughter, he employs Timone and Pumpa to watch her and he displays alot of anxiety over letting Kiara hunt on her own, his reaction to Kiaras near fatality after Kovu saves her from the fire was almost like he'd experienced a loss before. Simba's parental transformation is very similar to that of Ariels father Triton, before he lost his wife Atheana, Triton was a fun loving father... then after the loss of his wife, turns into a bitter, over protective (has Sebastian follow Ariel around) and a unreasonable man.
Simba displays very obvious changes that are common after a death of a loved one.
Also the theory of TLG being in an AU wouldn't make sense, as Kovu, Nuka and the rest of out land lions turn up in episode 20 of TLG where Kion and Zera had a show down.

    1. I agree with the theory that Kion could have been killed, it's not like Disney hasn't dared to kill off characters before. It's just never gone off the deep end into killing off children until now (if this theory is plausible). I think it makes a lot of sense in consideration of Simba's attitude when Kiara grows up. I would most likely swear off Disney forever if this was ever confirmed in a Lion King movie.

  8. I think that either he was killed by his great-aunt Zera(or however her name is spelled) since he went to the outlands to see his hyena friend. Or that fact that he wanted to make a place for himself and make the pridelands even bigger. There's also the theory that Kovu's mother ate him. Since there's the theory that in the end of the first movie, that's not Kirara but an older brother she had that was killed.

  9. I believe he isn't added to the story because Kopa, predecessor to Chiara en Kion was the first idea. Later the young boy got scrapped from the script and Chiara was put there instead. Kion was never supposed to be a part of the story. However, I do find Disney should rewrite the story and refilm Lion King 2 with Kion in it. It'd be much more fun!

  10. I believe the diplomatic mission idea could work and would explain why Kion and TLG are absent in SP and there would be no reason to mention Kion or TLG even in passing this gives Disney an opening to make a Lion Guard movie about outside missions that could potentially tie the story lines together. In TLG Kion was never taught about the outlander Lion pride led by Zira so when he meets Kovu and his siblings he has no idea that he can't trust Zira or that he has met his future brother in law...

  11. The reason why kion isnt in lion king is because lion guard isnt really part of lion king it is just a spin off for kids, that is why you see that the characters look a bit different, they were not made by the same people, and simba only has one real child which is Kiara, if you look hard yiu will realise that the movement in lion guard are a bit unrealistic but the movement in lion king are super good. Lion guard isnt really related to ths lion king

  13. Well, now that we know Scar's ghost has returned and is directing the hyenas, eventually there's going to be a show-down and I think it's plausible that Kion and Jasiri (and the other good hyenas) fight for power. This could lead them out of the pride-lands in order to drive Scar out, or even to find the new 'good hyenas' under Jasiri's rule another home.

Remember, Lion King and LKII don't even mesh very well. You have to be accepting of major problems between the continuity between them, and animation styles. These weren't written altogether working together. LK originally had a male baby (early children's books always referred to it as male), LKII was a made for video direct release and changed things around. The Lion Guard actually tries to fit in better than LKII did.

  14. Nah, Kion probably died

  15. Its really very simple its just a kids cartoon and it was made like 18 years later so they could basically do whatever they wanted cuz their target audience has probably never even seen Lion King 2 no big thing they just didnt need to put any effort into making it fit into continuity

  16. I hope they will be a series finale so we can see what happens to Kion before the rest of the events of LK2, but no matter how much I love Lion King, I think the first film and 1 1/2 connect more with each other and are better than SP and TLK.
